The Assemblist Letter 29 - Office Essentials

WHEN WE LAUNCHED THE BRAND ASSEMBLY SQUARE WE KNEW THAT WE WANTED TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT WAS VERY OPEN AND LIGHT.

Our tradeshow in LA has so many windows and skylights. All of that bright light set the tone and importance of having that come across in our New York space too. We’re also dealing with different types of designers that don’t have the same products, but even so, everyone really needs light no matter what! When finding the space we also wanted to be as open as possible but leave enough room to implement our own pops of color and other fun elements. We kept the brand furniture very basic so that our designers can really make it their own... we don’t want to force any aesthetic on top of their work. It was important that this whole space had the capability of being mobile - we do so many things here (from market to press days to events) so it’s important to be able to cater to that as well.

The inspiration was really keeping it clean and light, while playing off of the windows. Speaking of which, we’re probably in one of the very few buildings left in NYC that are pre-war and have 360 degree windows, so this was obviously an amazing find!

Generally we really wanted to have a space where brands could bring in their own creativity. As far as design goes and also in the sense of being a community, a lot of our members are constantly talking to each other and sharing ideas. So in terms of our design we made it a point to create many meeting areas all over the Square which have encouraged all of our resident members to come out of their own studios to work in the more public spaces. That sense of community has created a lot of productivity and creativity amongst the members and informed our layout of the Square.

3 ESSENTIALS EVERY FASHION OFFICE SHOULD HAVE:

Based on what I've learned so far in my career, here are a few essentials I believe every space should have access to.

LIGHT:

Natural light is a MUST for any creative space. I’ve worked in spaces that really just have cubicles (where you don’t even know what hour of the day it is) and it’s tough! Having that light helps break up the day.

COMFORTABLE CHAIRS:

This is important simply because you're in it for the majority of the day.

DECORATIVE ACCENTS:

Lastly, it's important to have anything that brings happiness to your space! Maggie who we’ve highlighted here on The Assemblist has her little plants, and whenever designer Maria Stanley moves in she has her gold stapler and desk accessories. So no matter the case, having that personal touch is important!

What’s funny is that all of this sort of contrasts with my own personal interior preferences. I like to have a lot of stuff and The Brand Assembly Square is the complete opposite of this and very minimal. My interior personal style is a little more colorful but I honestly don’t think I would want my office space to be like my home space - my home is very comfy and it’s important to have an office that feels reminiscent of this but only to an extent.

It’s really just so crazy to think Brand Assembly even has this amazing space (as our first office no less!) and in many ways I have my dream office which I am so thankful for already!
